Renal transplant: the perception of patients off waiting list in hemodialyis

Resumo: Aim: to describe the perception about renal transplant of patients on hemodialysis that have not yet entered the waiting list. Method: this qualitative and exploratory study was developed with 15 patients on hemodialysis of a renal clinic. Data collection occurred from March to July 2012 through narrative interview of experiences. Data were submitted to thematic analysis. Results: patients see renal transplantation as a treatment that still requires care especially with medications, and involve risks such as infection, rejection and death. However, the transplant is perceived as the possibility of a better life, with more freedom and fewer restrictions. Conclusion: the positive and negative perceptions of patients about a renal transplantation influence their decision of entering a waiting list to perform a transplant, since it implies changes and limitations in their daily life for which they are not prepared yet

La recolección de datos fue en marzo a julio de 2012, por médio de entrevista narrativas de vivienda. Los datos fueron sometidos a un análisis de contenido con una modalidad temática. Resultados: los pacientes perciben el trasplante renal como tratamiento que requiere mucho cuidado especialmente con los medicamentos, e implica riesgos como infección, rechazo y muerte. Sin embargo, el trasplante es visto como posibilidad de una vida mejor, con más libertad y menos restricciones. Conclusiones: las percepciones de los pacientes sobre el trasplante influyeron en la decisión de no ingresar en la lista de espera por implicar en cambios y limitaciones que no están preparados.Objetivo: descrever a percepção sobre o transplante renal de pacientes em hemodiálise que ainda não ingressaram em lista de espera. Método: investigação qualitativa, exploratória, desenvolvida com 15 pacientes em hemodiálise de uma clínica renal. A coleta dos dados ocorreu de março a julho de 2012, por meio da entrevista narrativa de vivências. Os dados foram submetidos à análise de conteúdo na modalidade temática. Resultados: os pacientes percebem o transplante renal como um tratamento que requer muitos cuidados, principalmente com medicações, e envolve riscos como infecções, rejeições e morte. Contudo, o transplante é percebido como a possibilidade de uma vida melhor, com mais liberdade e menos restrições.
