Cancer in the family: unveiling family members perceptions

Resumo: Objective: to describe the perception on immediate and extended family of a person diagnosed with cancer. Method: quantitative and qualitative study, involving family members who live with the patient during their treatment in the oncology ward of a hospital in Caxias do Sul, Rio Grande do Sul. Data was collected through semi-structured interviews and content analysis was performed subsequently. The project was approved by the Ethics Committee of the institution. Results: eighteen family members were interviewed. A cancer diagnosis has adverse effects on family members resulting in physical, psychological and social changes. Family members experience life style changes to get involved in overall care and remission-inducing treatment procedures. Conclusion: having someone diagnosed with cancer causes suffering and distress to family members and requires them to readjust their lifestyles

Métodos: estudio cuanti-cualitativo, con familiares que conviven y acompañan a los pacientes en sus rutinas de tratamiento, en el sector de oncología de un hospital en Caxias do Sul (Rio Grande del Sur). La colecta de datos se realizó a través de entrevista semiestructurada, además fue realizado el análisis de contenido de datos. El proyecto fue aprobado por el Comité de Ética de la Institución. Resultados: fueron entrevistados 18 familiares. El diagnóstico de cáncer incide sobre los familiares causando gran impacto negativo, reflejado en cambios físicos, psíquicos y sociales; se inicia una lucha constante para el combate a la enfermedad, llevando a la familia a cambiar sus hábitos de vida para auxiliarse unos a otros. Conclusión: tener un familiar con cáncer genera sufrimiento, angustia y exige reorganización en el estilo de vida de esas personas.Objetivo: Descrever as percepções dos familiares acerca do adoecimento e tratamento de membro da família com câncer. Métodos: Estudo quanti-qualitativo, desenvolvido com familiares que convivem com os pacientes em suas rotinas de tratamento, no setor de oncologia de um hospital, em Caxias do Sul-Rio Grande do Sul. Coleta de dados realizada através de entrevista semiestruturada, seguida da análise de conteúdo dos dados. O projeto foi aprovado pelo Comitê de Ética da instituição. Resultados: Entrevistaram-se 18 familiares. O diagnóstico de câncer recai sobre os familiares, causando um grande impacto negativo, refletindo-se em mudanças físicas, psíquicas e sociais. Inicia-se uma série de ações voltada à remissão da doença, em que os familiares empenham-se rotineiramente no cuidado e acompanhamento do paciente, levando a família a mudar seus hábitos diários para auxiliar uns aos outros.
