Resumo: Taking into account the Aristotle’s rhetoric, the aim of this essay is to present the rhetorical-theological arguments used by António Vieira in the Sermão Vigésimo Sétimo, com o Santíssimo Sacramento exposto, presented in 1633 to an African brotherhood devoted to Nossa Senhora do Rosário, showing that there were representations of the absolute and the impersonal entities, product of models of his time and symbiotically united by a group of laws and traditions, implicit in his speech. These entities are the Portuguese State and the Catholic Church. The sermon was the way that Vieira used to articulate the holy to the secular, without disrespecting neither God – his Lord – nor the Portuguese authorities – his ‘lords on earth’.

Essas entidades são o Estado português e a Igreja Católica.
