Objective - to clarify the applicability of cell therapy with adult stem cells in the treatment of type I diabetes mellitus in the national and international scenario. Methodology - exploratory descriptive bibliographic review, developed between March and October 2012. For this purpose, the databases Scielo, PubMed, Lilacs and Bireme were used, being considered original scientific articles published from 2002 to 2012. Results - five papers addressed the proposed theme, which presented the different cell therapy alternatives in type I diabetes mellitus worldwide. Conclusions - this study made it possible to conclude that the practice of cell therapy may be accessible to the entire population within a few years and has greater benefits than possible risks for the treatment of chronic diseases such as type I diabetes, providing improvements in the quality of life of patients. treated patients
