Resumo: This work analyzes Quanto vale ou é por quilo?, by Sergio Bianchi, as a film adaptation of the short story “Pai contra mãe”, by Machado de Assis. Focusing on violence, the article discusses slavery and the way it is shown in both texts. In addition, the favour, an instrument of power and domination, is presented as a type of violence, perpetuating the social hierarchy. Based on these aspects and on the studies by Stuart Hall, Roberto Schwarz, Norbert Elias, among others, the film is also associated with other Machadian texts, to consolidate the class conflict and the individualism.
