Resumo: The objective of this study was to determine the effects of different antioxidants on the seminal characteristics of White Plymouth Rock roosters from the 53rd to the 72nd week of age. Were conducted three experiments: experiment I (200 mg of vitamin E/kg/feed), experiment II (0.4 mg of selenium/kg/feed) and experiment III (6 mg of canthaxanthin/kg/feed). A total of 32 roosters were selected, distributed in a completely randomized design, with 16 replicates per treatment. Two treatments were used: negative control diet and supplemented with the antioxidant additive. The diets were isonutritivas, being allowed access, ad libitum, water and feed. The experimental phase was divided into 5 periods of 28 days. The parameters evaluated were: body weight, feed intake, lipid peroxidation (TBARS) and fatty acid profile (measured at the end of the periods). The volume seminal, motility, vigor, morphological changes, pH and sperm concentration (measured twice a year) were also determined. The data were submitted to analysis of variance through the program SAS (2011), considering statistically different at the level of 5% of significance. The vitamin E increased feed intake (P<0.05), without affecting body weight (P>0.05). The roosters supplemented with vitamin E presented lower seminal volume in the period V (P=0.0295). Motility and spermatic vigor increased significantly with inclusion of vitamin E from period II (P<0.05). The pH of the semen was not influenced by the addition of vitamin E (P>0.05). The addition of vitamin E improved the spermatic concentration in the last two analyzed periods, (P=0.0001) and (P=0.0038), period IV and period V, respectively, comprising the interval between 65th and 72nd week of age. The total morphological defects (P= 0.0589) were not minimized with the addition of vitamin E. Vitamin E decreased lipid peroxidation (TBARS), modifying the fatty acid profile of semen (P<0.05). The feed intake, body weight, seminal volume, spermatic concentration, morphological defects and pH were not influenced by the addition of selenium in the diet (P>0.05). The motility and spermatic vigor were increased with the inclusion of selenium in periods II, III and IV, comprising the interval between the 57th and 68th week of age (P<0.05). The TBARS of roosters semen supplemented with selenium was lower in the total experimental period (P=0.0331). There were lipid alterations, especially in long chain unsaturated fatty acids, for selenium supplementation (P<0.05). There was no change in feed intake, seminal volume and spermatic concentration by the inclusion of canthaxanthin in the diet (P>0.05). The roosters presented lower body weight in the last period by inclusion of canthaxanthin (P<0.05). The spermatic motility was higher in roosters supplemented with canthaxanthin in periods II, III and IV (P<0.05), comprising the weeks 57th- 68th. The spermatic vigor was significantly increased with the inclusion of canthaxanthin after the second evaluation period, which corresponds to the interval of the 57th-72th week of age (P<0.05). The seminal pH was lower in period V, when adding canthaxanthin in the diet (P=0.0234). TBARS did not decrease with canthaxanthin supplementation (P>0.05). There were significant changes in the fatty acid profile with the addition of canthaxanthin (P<0.05). The antioxidants tested improve the quality of poultry semen, especially the parameters of motility and sperm vigor. This allows for a greater potential for spermatozoa fertilization. Vitamin E and selenium reduce lipid peroxidation of semen. The alterations in the lipid profile by the addition of antioxidants were observed mainly in unsaturated fatty acids of chain with 20 and 22 carbons, important for fertility.

A vitamina E e o selênio reduzem a peroxidação lipídica do sêmen. As alterações no perfil lipídico pela adição dos antioxidantes foram percebidas principalmente nos ácidos graxos insaturados de cadeia com 20 e 22 carbonos importantes para a fertilidade.porUniversidade Federal de Santa MariaCentro de Ciências RuraisPrograma de Pós-Graduação em ZootecniaUFSMBrasilZootecniaAttribution-NonCommercial-NoDerivatives 4.0 Internationalhttp://creativecommons.org/licenses/by-nc-nd/4.0/info:eu-repo/semantics/openAccessCantaxantinaDesempenho reprodutivoMachosSelênioVitamina ECanthaxanthinReproductive performanceMalesSeleniumVitamin ECNPQ::CIENCIAS AGRARIAS::ZOOTECNIAEfeito da suplementação dietética de antioxidantes sobre os paramêtros reprodutivos de galosEffect of dietary supplementation of antioxidants on the reproductive parameters of roostersinfo:eu-repo/semantics/publishedVersioninfo:eu-repo/semantics/masterThesisRosa, Alexandre Pireshttp://lattes.cnpq.br/5343585494040314Fernandes, Jovanir Inês Mullerhttp://lattes.cnpq.br/0066392238872051Ferreira, Priscila Beckerhttp://lattes.cnpq.br/0361753854608875http://lattes.cnpq.br/0314212046694109Orso, Catiane50040000000260017f71f10-d0a7-45fc-b0cd-f3e798dfeaa4f60aecf3-06a4-49dd-a422-b6ccd4e11b6b450b1cde-af51-4bbc-96d6-2634fe39cf3d9ab03ced-4657-45a5-b23f-91b0c67bd175reponame:Manancial - Repositório Digital da UFSMinstname:Universidade Federal de Santa Maria (UFSM)instacron:UFSMORIGINALOrso, Catiane.pdfOrso, Catiane.pdfDissertação de Mestradoapplication/pdf1095503http://repositorio.ufsm.br/bitstream/1/11555/1/Orso%2c%20Catiane.pdf06a88eaa5d4077bc8df773d2796d43fcMD51CC-LICENSElicense_rdflicense_rdfapplication/rdf+xml; description The objective of this study was to determine the effects of different antioxidants on the seminal characteristics of White Plymouth Rock roosters from the 53rd to the 72nd week of age.
