Appropriation of the term “Disabled People”

Resumo: Disabled people are historically discriminated against and among the various actions to reduce discrimination, there is the investigation of the terminology that characterizes them. Research shows that the language and concepts that people use influence social aspects, such as pejorative terms. Based on these aspects, this study aims to analyze the appropriation and circulation of the term “pessoa com deficiência” (people with disability) in the Brazilian scientific community and to discuss the social nature of the terminologies and their implications. For the analysis of terminologies related to those with impairment, this research analyzed the appropriation of the term defined by the Convention on the Right of Persons with Disabilities used in Brazil based on the theoretical framework of the concepts of appropriation, by Roger Chartier (1988), translation and negotiation, by Zoia Prestes (2010), and circulation, by Pierre Bourdieu (2002). It can be seen the importance of translation and the distinction of the terms disability and impairment. The change in the translation of impairment as a hindrance instead of an injury results in the conception of the disability as a personal tragedy, a problem for the person himself, due to the impediment. Likewise, if the translation of impairment is disability, it implies not considering the physical and health problems that may occur. It was found that both the appropriation and the translation of a term must be inserted within a culture of origin and destination. Although the term used and appropriate in Brazil is “pessoa com deficiência” (people with disability), there is no consensus in the literature. It is hoped that this study will contribute to a critical reflection of that term used.

La investigación muestra que el lenguaje y los conceptos que las personas usan influyen en los aspectos sociales, como los términos peyorativos. Con base en estos aspectos, este estudio tiene como objetivo analizar la apropiación y circulación del término "pessoa com deficiência" (personas con discapacidad) en la comunidad científica brasileña y discutir la naturaleza social de las terminologías y sus implicaciones. Para el análisis de las terminologías relacionadas con las personas con discapacidad, esta investigación analizó la apropiación del término definido por la Convención sobre los Derechos de las Personas con Discapacidad utilizado en Brasil sobre la base del marco teórico de los conceptos de apropiación, por Roger Chartier (1988), traducción y negociación, por Zoia Prestes (2010), y circulación, por Pierre Bourdieu (2002). Se puede ver la importancia de la traducción y la distinción de los términos discapacidad y discapacidad. El cambio en la traducción de la discapacidad como un obstáculo en lugar de una lesión da como resultado la concepción de la discapacidad como una tragedia personal, un problema para la persona misma, debido al impedimento. Del mismo modo, si la traducción del impedimento es discapacidad, implica no considerar los problemas físicos y de salud que pueden ocurrir. Se descubrió que tanto la apropiación como la traducción de un término deben insertarse dentro de una cultura de origen y destino. Aunque el término utilizado y apropiado en Brasil es "pessoa com deficiência" (personas con discapacidad), no hay consenso en la literatura. Se espera que este estudio contribuya a una reflexión crítica de ese término utilizado.As pessoas com deficiência são historicamente discriminadas e, entre as várias ações para reduzir a discriminação, encontra-se a investigação da terminologia que as caracterizam. Pesquisas mostram que a linguagem e os conceitos que as pessoas utilizam influenciam os aspectos sociais, tal como termos pejorativos. Com base nesses aspectos, este estudo tem como objetivo analisar a apropriação e a circulação do termo “pessoa com deficiência” na comunidade científica brasileira e discutir a natureza social das terminologias e suas implicações. Para a investigação das terminologias relacionadas a quem possui o impairment, essa pesquisa analisou a apropriação do termo definido pela Convenção sobre o Direito das Pessoas com Deficiência utilizado no Brasil com base no referencial teórico dos conceitos de apropriação, de Roger Chartier (1988), tradução e negociação, de Zoia Prestes (2010), e circulação, de Pierre Bourdieu (2002). Pode-se constatar a importância da tradução e da distinção dos termos disability e impairment. A alteração na tradução do impairment como impedimento em vez de lesão resulta na concepção da deficiência como tragédia pessoal, um problema para a própria pessoa, devido ao impedimento. Da mesma forma, se a tradução de impairment for deficiência, implica não considerar os problemas físicos e de saúde que podem acontecer. Verificou-se que tanto a apropriação quanto a tradução de um termo devem estar inseridos dentro de uma cultura de origem e de destino. Embora o termo utilizado e apropriado no Brasil seja “pessoa com deficiência”, não há um consenso na literatura.
