PEQUIÁ OFCONQUEST: the victory from down against the giants of the iron

The research had an exploratory nature, donethrough a bibliographical survey in physical means and electronic sites. The article analyzes the process of struggle and conquest of 312 families from Pequiá de Baixo, in Açailândia (State of Maranhão), a neighborhood that the municipality established, without popular participation, as part of an Industrial Districtin the council. Vale Company and the five Steel companies, the iron giants, were established in this industrial district which includes Pequiá de Cima and Pequiá de Baixo, and they brought a rhythm of production that, without effective State control, causes social and environmental impacts in the region and, specially, in the area of the Pequiá de Baixo, where population suffer its effects as an aggression to life. In this way, the population of Pequiá de Baixo, assisted by technical studies of institutes, and supported by partner organizations (ACMP, CDVDH/CB, Rede Justiça nosTrilhos, Parishes of São João Batista and Santa Luzia and others), as well as by the MPE and DPE; they decided together, due to the impossibility of coexistence with the polluting companies, to fight for an area free of pollution
