Resumo: This paper aims to discuss some theoretical roots of linguistic prejudice. We argue that many discriminatory discourses on Popular Brazilian Portuguese are motivated by a linguistic perspective formulated in 19th-century. By that time, inflectional morphology was considered the model of the linguistic development, so that languages that had other typology – for instance, creole languages and African languages – were considered exceptional.  We show that the first approaches to the emergence of Popular Brazilian Portuguese were influenced by linguistic exceptionalism. They had a negative perspective on the contact of Portuguese with the African and Indigenous languages. We address the topic based on Linguistic Historiography, in order to show the political dimension of the knowledge on the languages. We are based on the Fleck’s (2010) framework, according to which the scientific knowledge establishes a complex relationship among the past, the present and the future.
