Resumo: In this research, we consider  the integration of literature into language teaching, adopting an interactionist approach, emerging as a pivotal element that facilitates students' education and fosters their social knowledge. To establish a solid theoretical foundation, we conducted a review of studies on the teaching and learning of the English Language, focusing on the use of literature within educational contexts. We examined notable scholars’ works such as Brumfit and Carter (2000), Candido (2011), Collie and Slater (1987), Lazar (1993), Mota (2010). We also used the theories of interactionist learning of additional languages as proposed by Bruner (1977), Figueiredo (2006), and Vygotsky (2015). We followed a methodological  approach that involved collecting data through questionnaires administered to English language teachers in primary education in a town in a Goiás state. We employed qualitative interpretive methods for data analysis, enabling an investigation into socio-verbal interactions within language teaching. The results confirm the efficacy of incorporating literature into English language teaching as it exhibits the potential to embrace an interactionist approach by facilitating student engagement with the target language, to construct linguistic knowledge, providing meaningful training, and granting access to the cultural heritage of humanity.
