Resumo: The cultural policies of the two dictatorships that marked the Brazilian twentieth century – the Estado Novo (1937-1945) and the military dictatorship (1964-1985) are closely associated with a certain strand of Brazilian modernism, as an agenda for cultural intervention by part of sectors of the literate elite, rather than as a cohesive programmatic movement. This strand can be named as a “conservative modernism”, despite the apparent contradiction of the term, and was characterized by the defense of a new place of the intellectual as a mediator between State and society, by the defense of racial democracy and by civic and moderate nationalism, seek a junction of the various Brazilian regionalisms. The “conservative modernism” was purged of the most radical experiences, aesthetically and politically speaking, often related to the modernist avant-gard.
