In this task, we are going to analyze the Taunay s regionalist novel Inocência, intending to study the conflicts of traditions and modernity, by both countryman s (whose traditional concepts are taken as archaic and offensive features) and urban man s (the civilized man, in transition, suffering by trying to understand and work with concepts yet unknown) point of view. Despite romanticists posture, the countryman is not the Iracema s hero and his behavior is described in negative features opposed to the romanticist trend since Alencar. There is a likely and hidden dispute among protagonists and antagonists taken as representatives of two social classes: the urban and rural ones. The narrator takes place in this scene and appraises the countryman s attitude in order to justify his own opinions before the (urban) readers and elucidate his disagreement to the character s posture.
