Resumo: | The Cayenne tick Amblyomma cajennense is widely dispersed throughout the Americas. In Brazil, this ectoparasite is distributed in almost all states. Epidemiological aspects may be related to the existence of a species complex of the taxon A. cajennense. The present study examined a portion of 340 base pairs of the mitochondrial 12S ribosomal gene of ticks of the specie A. cajennense using the technique of High Resolution Melt (HRM). One hundred ninety nine specimens were analyzed from Atlantic Forest, Cerrado and Pantanal biomes. After identification of the haplotypes, these were sequenced in order to obtain their nucleotide sequences, and then subjected to phylogenetic and philogeography analyses. The phylogeographic analysis indicated that the populations located in the Atlantic Forest, Cerrado and Pantanal biomes are sympatric. The phylogeny showed that specimens belonging to the argentine Yungas and the Brazilian Atlantic Forest are phylogenetically related, as well as individuals of Serrano Chaco and West Chaco; actual mountain forests of the Andes, the rainforests of Costa Rica, Guatemala, Ecuador, French Guiana, Mexico and temperate forests of the United States of America. The existence of reproductive incompatibility and strong genetic structure in the Americas suggest that the taxon A. cajennense is a complex of species. This finding is extremely important since the prevalence of diseases are directly linked to their vectors. |

The existence of reproductive incompatibility and strong genetic structure in the Americas suggest that the taxon A. cajennense is a complex of species. This finding is extremely important since the prevalence of diseases are directly linked to their vectors.
