Resumo: The establishment of adequate environmental conditions for poultry and other bird growing activity requires the study of thermal comfort levels. These studies need to consider the birds performance and welfare before the thermal conditions imposed by the growth environment, by means of evaluating the productive performance as well as their physiologic response. Besides the characterization of the above parameters, visual information can be used in order to facilitate the diagnoses of problems caused by inadequate condition of the growth environment. Therefore, artificial vision system have been taking place in the realm of animal behavior, since that by means of image processing techniques one can identify an object and extract measurements as well as monitor its positioning within an image. Thus, the general objective of this research was to develop methods to characterize the general behavior of the birds based on image processing techniques, as well as evaluate the temperature range that would represent the most comfortable environment for meat quails according to different ages. This research was accomplished in the facility of the Núcleo de Pesquisa em Ambiência e Engenharia de Sistemas Agroindustriais (AMBIAGRO), under the constructions and environmental research field of the Department of Agricultural Engineering at the Federal University of Viçosa, Viçosa-MG. The findings were presented, throughout this dissertation, in three distinct articles: Article I - Determination of thermal comfort condition and feeding behavior evaluation of European meat quail based on digital image analyses; Article II - Method for meat quail body mass determination based on digital image analysis; Article III - Development of a feed conversion index based on the presence frequency at the feeder and body mass of European meat quail using digital image analysis. Based on the results obtained through the survey, it was observed that the increase of the air temperature and the rate of globe temperature and humidity caused a reduction in feed intake observed much less frequently by the feeder, mean decrease of 19, 8% of usage time of the feeder, as the data obtained in the measurement of food intake, reduction of 23.8 g feed consumed. The ranges of air temperature and globe temperature index and humidity that represent state of thermal comfort for meat quails, aged 21 to 35 days, range between 25.7 º C and 30.9 º C and 74 6 and 80.4, respectively. The empirical model for determining the body weight of quail according to the number of pixels in the images and to estimate the empirical model feed as a function of frequency of use of the feeder body mass and estimated via digital image analysis showed are adequate for the purposes proposed. The estimated body mass values ranged from 119.4 to 237.6 g.
