The classification of successional stages has always played an important role from the scientific point of view, due to the fact that when researchers describe and characterize their study areas, they use plant, soil and climate aspects, among others. This classification is essential to provide researchers with similar bases for comparison and discussion of the found results and, thus, have a better understanding of the floristic composition, the forest types and dynamics. CONAMA Resolution n. 392, about the Definition of primary and secondary regeneration vegetation of the Atlantic Forest in the State of Minas Gerais , has also influenced the production sector. Every environmental licensing process related with the Atlantic Forest in the State of Minas Gerais must classify this vegetation in one of the successional stages set forth (advanced, intermediate and initial), in accordance with the criteria presented in this resolution. Thus, the concession of licenses (previous, installation and operation) depends on the vegetation classification, for the Resolution only takes into consideration initial stage areas of secondary succession whose soil may be used and changed, and advanced or intermediate stages only in case of public utility projects. Regarding the conservation of forest fragments and the economic activity carried out in the Atlantic Forest area, the carbon stock and carbon growth quantification is an alternative source of income and appreciation of the environmental resources, mainly the forest resources, such as the commercialization of carbon credits or the payment receipt of environmental services.
