Resumo: In this article, I base an approximation of the Kayabí people to the Kawahíwa indígenous groups, considering the expression Tupí-Kawahíwa (or Kawahíwa) with reference to the set of indigenous peoples and respective languages of sub-branch VI of the Tupí-Guaraní linguistic family, according to the genetic classification of Rodrigues and Cabral (2002, 2012). I make use of historical data and data from the ethnological literature on the Kawahima people, which, together with the results of the historical-comparative studies on the Tupí-Guaraní family, count importantly for the inclusion of the Kayabí language in that genetic sub-group.
