Tese (Doutorado em História)-Universidade de Brasília, Brasília, 2006.http://repositorio.unb.br/handle/10482/1842Tese (doutorado)—Universidade de Brasília, Departamento de História, 2006.O estudo Fronteira Oeste Brasileira: entre o contraste e a integração procurou analisar as motivações que levaram a definição dos limites internacionais do Brasil com a Bolívia, acordados pelos Tratados de Ayacucho de 1867 e o Tratado de Petrópolis de 1903; articulando-a com o processo de nacionalização do espaço fronteiriço, em dois momentos: o primeiro nos anos 1860 e o segundo, na virada do século XIX para o século XX. Esta pesquisa transita entre a tradição e as novas representações formuladas por representantes da elite brasileira, sobre a fronteira como parte da nação, e as intervenções políticas tanto no campo internacional como na busca da sua inserção à economia brasileira e mundial no final do século XIX. Da mesma forma, apresenta os interesses geopolíticos relacionados a este espaço geográfico, bem como salienta os diferentes níveis de percepção ligados a esta localidade: numa perspectiva de transição, que caracteriza os primeiros anos do processo de independência, quando começa a se desgarrar da visão colonial de fronteira internacional, disputada por dois Impérios, passando pela idéia de elemento essencial para a unidade territorial do país, até constituir-se como partícipe dos projetos de integração do Estado brasileiro. Esta pesquisa observa os diferentes tipos de noções e papéis que a Fronteira Oeste assume, do papel de guarda-costa das possessões territoriais, aos poucos será reconhecida como um lugar de grandes possibilidades no campo econômico, inclusive na atração de capital estrangeiro, portanto, uma área capaz de entrar na era do progresso. Na última década do século XIX, a fronteira começou a ser valorizada com projetos visando sua incorporação econômica, com grande participação da iniciativa privada, além de políticas públicas delineadas tanto pelo governo federal como pelos governos locais. _______________________________________________________________________________________ ABSTRACTThe study entitled Brazilian West Border: between contrasts and integration tried to analyze the motivations that took the definition of the international limits of Brazil and Bolivia according the Treated to Ayacucho of 1867 and the Treated of Petrópolis of 1903; comparing it with the process of “nationalizations” from the bordier space, in two moments: the first in the 1860 an the second, in the change from the 19th century to the 20th. This research goes among the traditions ant the new representations done by representatives of the Brazilian group dominant about the border, as part of the nation, and the politics of interventions in the international field as in the its search for insertion in the Brazilian and worldwide economy by the end of the 19th Century. At the same time, it shows the geopolitics interests related to this geographic space it also points the different levels of perception connected to the place: since a perception of transition, that shows the first years of the process of independence, when it started to get separated from the colonial view of the international border by two Empires by the idea of essential element for the union of the country fill it participating in the integration projects of the Brazilian state. This research observe the different kinds of nations and roles that the West Border takes, the role of the guards of the territorial possessions, started being recognized as a place of big possibilities for the economic field, also attracting foreign investment, so a capable place for progress.
