Mastectomia profilática : reflexões bioéticas

Prophylactic mastectomy is a surgery that removes the breasts for minimizing the risk of cancer incidence, which comes to attain up to 90% of reduction in its occurrence. For this article, a qualitative research was made based on the story of five women who had unilateral breast cancer diagnosed and decided for a bilateral mastectomy with immediate reconstruction. The life quality of these patients was assessed after the procedure, including a bioethical reflection on this type of intervention, which is considered as aggressive and whose indications are still controversial. Findings were analyzed by contemplating the diagnosis and the decision-making for such treatment option, inserting the context of life quality after the surgery. The fear of cancer makes patients more fragile, to the point of reducing their autonomy and leaving the decision up to their physician; despite all that, the patients in this study have positively evaluated the process result. _______________________________________________________________________________________ RESUMEN
