A partir daí, a população cresceu extensivamente até a introdução das raças comerciais no final do século XIX. Atualmente, somente 1.408 animais permanecem na região do Planalto Catarinense. Com o objetivo de avaliar as características fenotípicas, genéticas e o risco de extinção desta raça foram realizados três estudos. O primeiro analisou a estrutura genética da população, por meio de dados de registro de 1.638 animais, fornecidos pela Associação Brasileira de Criadores de Bovinos da Raça Crioula Lageana, coletados entre os anos de 1970 e 2008. Os resultados indicam que apesar do reduzido número de animais e do desenvolvimento populacional a partir de uma estreita base genética, a população apresenta baixos níveis de endogamia, baixa diferenciação genética e tamanho efetivo populacional adequado para conservação da raça. O segundo estudo avaliou os dados morfométricos de 346 animais, classificando-os de acordo com a idade, sexo e região de origem no Planalto Catarinense. Os resultados indicaram acentuado dimorfismo sexual, terminação tardia, baixa diferenciação entre as regiões e altas correlações entre as medidas morfométricas. O terceiro estudo analisou a interferência de parâmetros demográficos, ambientais e genéticos na viabilidade populacional da raça Crioula Lageana ao longo de 500 anos, por meio da simulação de 128 cenários hipotéticos. Os resultados mostraram que a população não apresenta risco aparente de extinção, em consequência da alta diversidade genética, elevada taxa de crescimento populacional e adequada estrutura demográfica. O conhecimento e a aplicação das informações geradas neste estudo pelos criadores da raça poderão auxiliar na conservação deste valioso recurso genético. _______________________________________________________________________________ ABSTRACTThe Criollo Lageano cattle breed is a naturalized Brazilian breed that descends from animals brought by the Portuguese settlers in the 16th century. Since then, the population increased in numbers, until the introduction of commercial breeds at the end of the 19th century. Currently, only 1,408 animals remain on the Plateau of Santa Catarina State. Three studies were undertaken to evaluate phenotypic and genetic parameters of this breed, as well as its risk of extinction. The first one examined the genetic structure of the population, using data of 1,638 animals, supplied by the Criollo Lageano Cattle Breeders Association, collected between 1970 and 2008. The results indicate that despite the small number of animals and the population development from a narrow genetic base, the population presents low levels of inbreeding, low genetic differentiation and an effective population size suitable for conservation of the breed. The second study assessed the morphometric data of 346 individuals, taking into consideration age, sex and region of origin in the Plateau of Santa Catarina State. The results showed marked sexual dimorphism, late termination, low differentiation between regions and high correlations between the morphometric measurements. The third study analyzed the interference of demographic, environmental and genetic factors on the viability of Criollo Lageano cattle population over 500 years, through 128 hypothetical scenarios. The results showed that the population has no apparent risk of extinction as a consequence of its high genetic diversity, high rate of growth and appropriate demographic structure.
