É nosso objetivo, portanto, explicar por que em determinada língua, ao contrário de outra, é admitido o encalhe do quantificador em posição pós-verbo-lexical. Também crucial para a discussão é a observação de outro contraste entre o PB e o inglês, ilustrado em “A Maria odeia os alunos todos” / *Mary hates the students all, o qual conduz à hipótese, formulada neste trabalho, segundo a qual todos os contrastes citados remontam, por hipótese, a uma diferença estrutural nos DPs das duas línguas. Em relação ao contraste “A Maria odeia os alunos todos” / *Mary hates the students all, testes de constituintes nos revelam que, no PB, mas não necessariamente no inglês, o quantificador tem de ser gerado em posição bem baixa na sentença, isto é, uma posição-Ө, pois se demonstra que, naquela, mas não nesta língua, quantificador e DP formam um constituinte. A partir dessa constatação, pressupomos, segundo propostas disponíveis na literatura, haver a possibilidade de, no inglês, o quantificador ser inserido tardiamente em uma derivação, diretamente no local em que ocorre na superfície, o mesmo não ocorrendo em línguas como o PB. Com essa análise, não podemos aceitar a generalização segundo a qual quantificadores não podem flutuar em posição-Ө, a qual sustenta análises prévias sobre o inglês, já que, partindo-se do pressuposto de que o verbo do português apenas se move até T, existe a possibilidade de quantificadores estarem encalhados nesse tipo de posição no PB. Concluindo, pressupondo-se a inserção tardia do quantificador no inglês, e do movimento curto do verbo no PB, examinamos a hipótese de explicar os referidos contrastes entre as duas línguas sob a forma de generalização, a saber, a de que línguas cujos quantificadores formam constituinte com o DP que quantificam, como é o caso do PB, mas não o do inglês, permitem que aqueles fiquem encalhados em posição pós-verbo-lexical na estrutura sintagmática, sejam essas posições internas ou externas ao âmbito-θ. _________________________________________________________________________________ ABSTRACTThe starting point for the present analysis was the observation, following Sportiche (1988), of a contrast between Brazilian Portuguese, henceforth BP, and English, concerning the positioning of the quantifier “all” (todos) in the sentence, that is, the fact that BP allows the derivation of sentences such as As crianças vieram todas and As sentenças foram decoradas todas, ungrammatical in English: “*The children came all” and “*The sentences were memorized all”. Therefore, it is our aim to explain why one language, as opposed to another, allows the stranding of a quantifier in a postlexical- verb position. The observation of another contrast, that is, A Maria odeia os alunos todos / “*Mary hates the students all”, is crucial to our argumentation towards the hypothesis that all the above contrasts are due to a structural difference between the BP DP and the English DP. As for the contrast A Maria odeia os alunos todos / “*Mary hates the students all”, constituency tests show that in BP, yet not necessarily in English, the quantifier must be inserted in a very low position – a Ө-position – since in BP, but not in English, quantifier and DP make up a constituent. Thus, according to proposals available in the literature, we assume that the English quantifier might be acyclically inserted in a derivation directly in its surface position, which, we will argue, does not occur in BP. As a result, we will not be able to accept the generalization that quantifiers cannot be floated in Ө-positions, since, assuming that the Portuguese verb only raises up to T, there would be a chance that quantifiers get stranded in a thematic position.
