Development as a fraud and the decolonial way out

Resumo: This article recovers the debate on the concept of development, opposed by Latin American decolonial theories. America was the privileged locus for the continuity of colonial subservient relations in capitalism. When the imperial and metropolitan rule in the former colonies were removed, the processes of independence triggered the development of capitalism beyond Europe. With the relations of production of wage and private property, the patterns of consumption and the consolidation of modern nation-states in the New World, came the capitalist worldview. A unilinear history, a single way of life and only a pattern of knowledge production and social organization. We argue, therefore, that instead of a goal, development is a farce that constrained economic and social thinking in Latin America to the unfinished, imperfect and colonial reproduction of Eurocentric bourgeois civilization. Overcoming this farce lies in the decolonization of knowledge and in revolutionary praxis.

Latinoamerica fue el lugar privilegiado para la continuidad de las relaciones de subordinación coloniales en el capitalismo. Cuando se eliminaron los poderes imperiales y metropolitanos de las antiguas colonias, los procesos de independencia desencadenaron el desarrollo del capitalismo más allá de Europa. Con las relaciones de producción del salario y la propiedad privada, los patrones de consumo y la consolidación de los estados-nación modernos en el Nuevo Mundo, llegó la cosmovisión capitalista. Una historia unilineal, una forma de vida única y solo un patrón de producción de conocimiento y organización social. Sostenemos, por tanto, que en lugar de ser objetivo, el desarrollo es una farsa que constreñía el pensamiento económico y social en América Latina a la reproducción inconclusa, imperfecta y colonial de la civilización burguesa eurocéntrica. Superar esta farsa pasa por la descolonización del conocimiento y la praxis revolucionaria.Este artigo recupera o debate sobre a concepção de desenvolvimento, contraposta por teorias decoloniais latinoamericanas. A América constituiu o lócus privilegiado para a continuidade das relações coloniais de subserviência no capitalismo. Ao serem destituídos os poderes imperiais e metropolitanos nas ex-colônias, os processos de independência deflagraram o desenvolvimento do capitalismo para além da Europa. Junto às relações de produção do assalariamento e propriedade privada, os padrões de consumo e a consolidação dos Estados-Nação modernos no Novo Mundo, instaurou-se a cosmovisão capitalista. Uma história unilinear, um único modo de viver e somente um padrão de produção de conhecimento e organização social. Defendemos, pois, que ao invés de objetivo, o desenvolvimento é uma farsa que constrangeu o pensamento econômico e social na América Latina à reprodução inacabada, imperfeita e colonial da civilização burguesa eurocêntrica.
