The militar regime and the brazilian political system: the origin of the natural candidacy

This paper discusses the motivations that leaded to the introduction of natural candidacy – the right that a parliamentary has to compete, in subsequent elections, to the same position he now occupies – in Brazilian electoral legislation which ruled the elections of 1974, which implies attempting to the peculiarities concerned to that historical context. According to the research findings, the natural candidacy emerged as a proposal from the parliamentaries themselves, notably those from the National Renewal Alliance (political party that supported the military regime), in order to protect themselves from the direction of their own parties. This work was constructed by searching the records from the sessions of the Representative and Senate Chambers. Besides, we consulted the literature related to this subject.
