The semantic selection of the manner adverb "bem" (“well”) reveals an event structure in verb phrases

Resumo: | This study analyzes bem (well) in its use as a manner adverb when modifying verb phrases in Brazilian Portuguese. Taking the perspective that verb phrases can be broken down into a syntactically represented event structure, we argue that the manner adverb bem semantically selects durative sub-events (states or processes) and will always be allowed in verb phrases which have some durative component in their event structure. At the end, we show how this perspective even explains the occurrences of the adverb under analysis in verb phrases headed by verbs typically classified as achievements. This study therefore provides not only a robust description of the properties of bem as a manner adverb, but also an argument in favor of treating the structure of the verb phrase not as a syntactic structure projected by an item, but as a syntactic and semantic arrangement into which a verb root may be allowed. |

En este trabajo analizamos bien el adverbio con la lectura de una manera modificando los sintagmas verbales de la región portuguesa. Basándonos en la opinión de que el sintagma verbal puede descomponerse en una estructura de eventos representada sintácticamente, argumentamos que selecciona semánticamente subeventualidades durativas (estados o procesos), y siempre se licenciará en sintagmas verbales que tienen algún componente durativo en su estructura de eventos. En la sección final del artículo, mostramos cómo esta perspectiva explica bien incluso la aparición de adverbios en sintagmas verbales encabezados por verbos típicamente clasificados como culminaciones (achievements). Con esto, creemos que el artículo proporciona no solo una descripción robusta de las propiedades del adverbio bajo análisis (al menos en su interpretación de la forma) sino también un argumento a favor de pensar la estructura del sintagma verbal no como una estructura diseñada por un elemento, sino como una disposición sintáctico-semántica en la que se puede licenciar una raíz verbal.Neste trabalho analisamos o advérbio bem com leitura de maneira modificando sintagmas verbais do português brasileiro. Partindo da visão de que o sintagma verbal pode ser decomposto em uma estrutura de eventos sintaticamente representada, defendemos que bem de maneira seleciona semanticamente subeventualidades durativas (estados ou processos), e sempre será licenciado em sintagmas verbais que possuam algum componente durativo em sua estrutura de eventos. Na seção final do artigo, mostramos como essa perspectiva explica até mesmo a ocorrência do advérbio bem de maneira em sintagmas verbais encabeçados por verbos tipicamente classificados como culminações (achievements). Com isso, acreditamos que o artigo forneça não só uma descrição robusta das propriedades do advérbio sob análise (pelo menos em sua interpretação de maneira) como também um argumento a favor de pensarmos a estrutura do sintagma verbal não como uma estrutura projetada por um item, mas um arranjo sintático-semântico no qual uma raiz verbal pode ser licenciada.
