A semiotic look on mathematical modeling: a focus on metaphors

Resumo: Considering the importance of the signic language forconceptualization in mathematics, our work is intended to present reflectionsabout the importance of a special type of sign, the metaphor, in mathematicalmodeling activities. The reflections about possible approaches betweenmathematical models (obtained in mathematical modeling activities) and theproduction of metaphors are guided by the analysis of a modeling activitydeveloped by students of a mathematics degree course, in relation to theseuqestions: Is a mathematical model a metaphor? Is mathematical modeling an equivalent process to the process of metaphor production? Does the use or theproduction of models and metaphors favor the construction of meanings forobjects of the conceptual domains they are associated to? The reflections signalthat we can glimpse approaches among models, modeling and metaphors thatcan be important for the construction of the students' knowledge involved inactivities of use and production of models and metaphors.

As reflexões sobre possíveis aproximações entre modelos matemáticos e metáforas, são orientadas pela análise de uma atividade de modelagem desenvolvida por alunos de um curso de Licenciatura em Matemática em relação às questões: Um modelo matemático é uma metáfora? A modelagem matemática é um processo equivalente ao processo de produção de uma metáfora? O uso ou a produção de modelos e metáforas favorece a construção de significados para objetos dos domínios conceituais a que estão associados?
