Summary: | It can be said with certainty that the textbook is the most used tool at school by teachers ofall disciplines. Due to its importance, both as a teaching resource and as a source of information,among its many other functions, it has been historically subjected to political or religious control,submitted to censure and authorization mechanisms. This text aims to make some considerations aboutthe authorization and evaluation process of textbooks for Mathematics teaching in the 19th century,when the first textbooks by brazilian authors were written for Elementary and Secondary schools. Toweave such considerations, textbooks from this time were consulted, as well as legislation andhandwritten documents available in the General Archives of the City of Rio de Janeiro. |

Devido a sua importância, tanto como recurso didático, quanto como fonte de informações – dentre outras de suas muitas funções, eles têm sido historicamente produtos sujeitos ao controle político ou religioso, submetendo-se a mecanismos de censura e autorização. Este texto tem como objetivo fazer algumas considerações sobre o processo de autorização e avaliação de livros didáticos para o ensino de Matemática no século XIX, momento em que começaram a surgir as primeiras obras didáticas destinadas às escolas elementares e secundárias, escritas por autores brasileiros.
