Women in the political field: discourse grammars around gender in the context of impeachment

Resumo: In this essay we investigate the media discourses about gender disseminated in three distinct moments of contemporary Brazilian politics: the election and inauguration of President Dilma Rousseff; the impeachment process initiated in December 2015 and completed in August 2016; and the establishment of Michel Temer's interim government. The analysis was carried out using journalistic articles published in newspapers, magazines and online portals in the country during the period of events (predominantly texts from the first half of 2016). In addition, we analyzed the comments of Internet users related to the reports. The material studied revealed that the main statements expressed a resumption of domestic space as a place for women and emphasized an inability of women to assume important positions in public life, constituting themselves as arguments mobilized to legitimize Dilma's impediment.

El análisis se realizó a partir de artículos periodísticos publicados en diarios, revistas y portales en línea del país durante el período de los hechos (predominantemente textos del primer semestre de 2016). Además, analizamos los comentarios de los internautas relacionados con los informes. El material estudiado reveló que los principales enunciados expresaron una reanudación del espacio doméstico como un lugar para las mujeres y enfatizaron la incapacidad de las mujeres para asumir cargos importantes en la vida pública, constituyéndose como argumentos movilizados para legitimar el impedimento de Dilma.Neste ensaio investigamos os discursos midiáticos acerca de gênero difundidos em três distintos momentos da política contemporânea brasileira: a eleição e posse da presidenta Dilma Rousseff; o processo de impeachmentinstaurado em dezembro de 2015 e finalizado em agosto de 2016; e o estabelecimento do governo interino de Michel Temer. A análise foi realizada a partir de matérias jornalísticas veiculadas em jornais, revistas e portais onlinedo país no período dos acontecimentos (predominantemente textos da primeira metade de 2016). Complementarmente, analisamos os comentários de internautas relacionados às reportagens.
