Summary: The application of scientific medicine methods to popular practices for combating and preventing diseases has consolidated many therapies, such as phytotherapy, which is currently used as a target of national public policies and encouraged by the World Health Organization (WHO). Since the indiscriminate use of conventional therapies can lead to some types of microbial resistance, the essential oils use is an alternative is a common practice due to their different physiological effects. Because of that, this work aims to understand how the essential oil of Melaleuca alternifolia, also known as tea tree oil (TTO), has been used in dental practices from 2011 to 2021. Therefore, a bibliographical review was carried out in online platforms, such as the Medline database - Entrez PubMed; Virtual Health Library - VHL (Latin American and Caribbean Center for Health Sciences Information): Medline, Lilacs, SciELO; Cochrane Database of Systematic Reviews. The analysis of the results revealed that the use of TTO in dental practices is a promising area. Even though there are few consolidated publications on the subject, they showed very positive results.

Even though there are few consolidated publications on the subject, they showed very positive results.A aplicação de métodos da medicina cientifica às práticas populares de combate e prevenção de doenças, consolidou muitas terapêuticas como por exemplo a fitoterapia, que hoje tem sua utilização como objeto de políticas públicas nacionais e internacionais incentivadas pela Organização Mundial da Saúde (OMS). Tendo em vista que o uso indiscriminado de terapêuticas convencionais pode acarretar certa resistência microbiana, dessa forma o uso de óleos essenciais como alternativa vem se tornando uma prática comum devido aos seus diferentes efeitos fisiológicos. Diante disso, este trabalho tem como objetivo compreender como o óleo essencial de Melaleuca Alternifolia ou tea tree oil (TTO) vem sendo utilizado nas práticas odontológicas ao longo de 2011 a 2021. Para isso foi realizada uma pesquisa bibliográfica nos bancos de dados Medline database - Entrez PubMed; Biblioteca Virtual em Saúde - BVS (Centro Latino Americano e do Caribe de Informação em Ciências da Saúde): Medline, Lilacs, SciELO e Base de Dados Cochrane de Revisões Sistemáticas (The Cochrane Database of Systematic Reviews).
