This article treats about of the importance of the public squares for the cities, its appearance, evolution and its uses throughout the time, as well as the relevance of the public spaces in general, the relation of the people with these spaces, what makes an inhabited space and the problems caused for the abandonment of these, its impact in the people’s life and in cities. The urban interventions, that come more being each time executed in the cities with intention to recoup abandoning and little used public spaces, are argued, showing the different types of intervention and presenting application examples of these. A study of case about square Raposo Tavares in the city of Maringá - PR also is boarded, expressing its historical importance for the city in question, as well as the problems that this place has, based on the opinions of citizens who use it and in comments of the place, evidencing the necessity of an intervention in the same one, searching to improve the quality of life and the security of the population.
