Resumo: The objective of this research was to evaluate the phytochemical properties, antioxidant and cytotoxic activities of the crude ethanolic extract of the leaves of Terminalia catappa L. After going through the extraction process, a yield of 12.7% of the percentage by weight (m/m), which resulted in a total of 38.28 g of extract to be used in the analyzes. The phytochemical characterization was of a qualitative character, where the presence of secondary metabolites was detected by means of colorimetric and precipitation techniques. Initially, the 2,2-diphenyl-1-picrilhidrazil radical sequestration method was used to evaluate the antioxidant activity of the species Terminalia catappa L., then the extract's toxicity against the crustacean Artemia salina was estimated. In prognosis, eleven classes of secondary metabolites were found (alkaloids, phenols and tannins, saponins, flavonoids, sesquiterpenolactones, organic acids, reducing sugars, azulenes, depsids and depsidones). The extract indicated high antioxidant activity (IC50: 100.7 µg.mL-1). Cytotoxic activity with regard to Artemia salina revealed a preliminary result as non-toxic (LC50: 1,272.7 µg.mL-1). In the end, the results showed that the species includes a diversity of biological activities to be explored and, consequently, a considerable pharmacological potential. These results show the potential of the species Terminalia catappa L. as a medicinal plant, supporting and justifying its extensive popular use. It may be a promising species for carrying out more in-depth studies that will result in the strengthening of the information acquired in this work, and may in the future contribute to the formulation of a new herbal product. Keywords: Castanets; Secondary metabolites; Oxidative stress; Toxicity.
