Depression symptoms and associated factors in healthcare university students

Resumo: Depressive disorders are among the main psychiatric diseases that affect the population, including university students. In this context, this study sought to assess the prevalence of depression symptoms and associated factors in university students in the health area. This is an analytical, cross-sectional study with a quantitative approach. Data collection took place through the application of a questionnaire that addressed sociodemographic and behavioral aspects, health status and assessment of the anthropometric profile. 364 university students participated and the prevalence of symptoms of depression was 19.2%. Skin color (p = 0.048), body image dissatisfaction (p = 0.032), physical activity level (p = 0.029), self-rated health (p = 0.001) and anxiety symptoms (p = 0.001) were associated with depression symptoms. It is concluded that depressive symptoms are prevalent among university students and that sociodemographic, behavioral and health status are associated with these symptoms.

En ese contexto, este estudio buscó evaluar la prevalencia de síntomas de depresión y factores asociados en estudiantes universitarios del área de la salud. Se trata de un estudio analítico, transversal y con enfoque cuantitativo. La recolección de datos ocurrió a través de la aplicación de un cuestionario que abordó aspectos sociodemográficos y conductuales, estado de salud y evaluación del perfil antropométrico. Participaron 364 estudiantes universitarios y la prevalencia de síntomas de depresión fue del 19,2%. El color de la piel (p = 0,048), la insatisfacción con la imagen corporal (p = 0,032), el nivel de actividad física (p = 0,029), la autoevaluación de la salud (p = 0,001) y los síntomas de ansiedad (p = 0,001) se asociaron con los síntomas de depresión. Se concluye que los síntomas depresivos son prevalentes entre los estudiantes universitarios y que los estados sociodemográficos, conductuales y de salud están asociados a estos síntomas.Os transtornos depressivos estão entre as principais doenças psiquiátricas que acometem a população, inclusive entre universitários. Neste contexto, este estudo buscou avaliar a prevalência de sintomas de depressão e os fatores associados em universitários da área da saúde. Trata-se de um estudo analítico, de caráter transversal e abordagem quantitativa. A coleta de dados ocorreu mediante aplicação de um questionário que abordava os aspectos sociodemográficos, comportamental, estado de saúde e avaliação do perfil antropométrico. Participaram 364 universitários e a prevalência de sintomas de depressão foi 19,2%. Cor da pele (p = 0,048), insatisfação com a imagem corporal (p = 0,032), nível de atividade física (p = 0,029), autopercepção de saúde (p = 0,001) e sintomas de ansiedade (p = 0,001) se associaram aos sintomas da depressão.
