COVID-19 in the State of Bahia: spatial analysis of the occurrence and deaths in the first quarter of the pandemic

Summary: This article aims to describe the epidemiological characteristics of COVID-19 in the state of Bahia, Brazil, during the first quarter of the pandemic, in the year 2020. It is an ecological type study with a descriptive approach, which characterized the pandemic of the COVID-19 in the state of Bahia, Brazil, in the months of March, April and May, in the year 2020. Epidemiological data were obtained from the Epidemiological Bulletin COVID-19 BAHIA, provided by the Epidemiological Surveillance Directorate of the State Health Department of Bahia, arising from the notifications made by the health secretariats of the 417 municipalities of that state. Of the total confirmed cases (18,392) according to the criteria indicated above, the total number of health professionals affected by the disease was 2,683, equivalent to 14.58%. The five groups of professionals most affected in the state were: auxiliary and nursing technician (890); nurse (555); physician (312); physical therapist (96); social worker (56). The other professionals together added up to 774 confirmed cases. As for the sex of confirmed cases, 53.01% were female, 44.08% were male. The most affected age group was 30 to 39 years old. Regarding deaths by municipality of residence in the state of Bahia, 667 deaths by COVID-19 were found, with a lethality coefficient of 3.63%. It was found that the capital of Bahia led the number of cases and deaths by COVID-19, that the female sex led the number of cases and the male the highest percentage of death. Adults were the most affected, especially when they had some associated comorbidity.

Se trata de un estudio de tipo ecológico con enfoque descriptivo, que caracterizó la pandemia de la COVID-19 en el estado de Bahía, Brasil, en los meses de marzo, abril y mayo, en el año 2020. Los datos epidemiológicos se obtuvieron del Boletín Epidemiológico COVID-19 BAHIA, proporcionado por la Dirección de Vigilancia Epidemiológica del Departamento de Salud del Estado de Bahía, derivado de las notificaciones realizadas por las secretarías de salud de los 417 municipios de ese estado. Del total de casos confirmados (18.392) según los criterios antes indicados, el número total de profesionales sanitarios afectados por la enfermedad fue de 2.683, equivalente al 14,58%. Los cinco grupos de profesionales más afectados en el estado fueron: auxiliar y técnico de enfermería (890); enfermera (555); médico (312); fisioterapeuta (96); trabajador social (56). El resto de profesionales sumaron en conjunto 774 casos confirmados. En cuanto al sexo de los casos confirmados, el 53,01% eran mujeres, el 44,08% eran hombres. El grupo de edad más afectado fue el de 30 a 39 años. En cuanto a las muertes por municipio de residencia en el estado de Bahía, se encontraron 667 muertes por COVID-19, con un coeficiente de letalidad de 3.63%. Se encontró que la capital de Bahía lideró el número de casos y muertes por COVID-19, que el sexo femenino lideró el número de casos y el masculino el mayor porcentaje de muertes. Los adultos fueron los más afectados, especialmente cuando tenían alguna comorbilidad asociada.Este artigo tem como objetivo descrever as características epidemiológicas da COVID-19, por meio de um estudo ecológico, no estado da Bahia, Brasil, durante o primeiro trimestre da pandemia, no ano de 2020. Os outros profissionais juntos somaram 774 casos confirmados. Quanto ao sexo dos casos confirmados, 53,01% foram do sexo feminino, 44,08% foram do sexo masculino. A faixa etária mais atingida foi a de 30 a 39 anos. A respeito dos óbitos por município de residência no estado da Bahia, constatou-se 667 óbitos por COVID-19, com coeficiente de letalidade de 3,63%. Constatou-se que a capital baiana liderou o número de casos e óbitos pela COVID-19, que o sexo feminino liderou o número de casos e o masculino o maior percentual de morte.
