Climate variability and dengue cases in cities in the state of Paraíba, Brazil

Resumo: The present study aimed to correlate meteorological variables (rainfall and average air temperature) to reported cases of dengue in cities in the state of Paraíba, from 2007 to 2017. The state of Paraíba presents climate variability due to physical and Atmospheric conditions and variations in these variables generate conditions that favor the increase of breeding sites, consequently the development of the Aedes Aegypti vector and the emergence of diseases transmitted by this mosquito, such as dengue. For this purpose, epidemiological data obtained from the Notifiable Diseases Information System (SINAN) and meteorological data from the Executive Agency for Water Management of the State of Paraíba (AESA) and the National Institute of Meteorology (INMET) were used. Subsequently, these data were spatialized in the Quantum GIS software version 2.14, using the IDW interpolation method. The results showed a low correlation between the two meteorological variables and the reported cases of dengue in the mesoregions of the state. There was a low correlation between air temperature and reported cases of dengue in all mesoregions of the state throughout the study period, and a moderate correlation between reported cases of dengue and rainfall in half of the period. The Borborema and Sertão mesoregions stand out for presenting epidemics in seven of the eleven analyzed years. This condition can be justified by the water crisis due to climate variability, however, it is necessary to analyze other aspects related to the proliferation of the vector, such as socioeconomic issues, with few studies focused on the theme for these mesoregions.

El estado de Paraíba presenta variabilidad climática debido a las condiciones físicas y atmosféricas y variaciones en estas variables generan condiciones que favorecen el aumento de criaderos, consecuentemente el desarrollo del vector Aedes Aegypti y la aparición de enfermedades transmitidas por este mosquito, como el dengue. Para ello, se utilizaron datos epidemiológicos obtenidos del Sistema de Información de Enfermedades de Declaración Obligatoria (SINAN) y datos meteorológicos de la Agencia Ejecutiva de Gestión del Agua del Estado de Paraíba (AESA) y del Instituto Nacional de Meteorología (INMET). Posteriormente, estos datos fueron espacializados en el software Quantum GIS versión 2.14, utilizando el método de interpolación IDW. Los resultados mostraron una baja correlación entre las dos variables meteorológicas y los casos de dengue notificados en las mesorregiones del estado. Hubo una correlación baja entre la temperatura del aire y los casos notificados de dengue en todas las mesorregiones del estado durante todo el período de estudio, y una correlación moderada entre los casos notificados de dengue y las precipitaciones en la mitad del período. Las mesorregiones de Borborema y Sertão se destacan por presentar epidemias en siete de los once años analizados. Esta condición puede ser justificada por la crisis hídrica por la variabilidad climática, sin embargo, es necesario analizar otros aspectos relacionados con la proliferación del vector, como lo socioeconómico, siendo pocos los estudios enfocados en el tema para estas mesorregiones.O presente trabalho teve o objetivo de correlacionar variáveis meteorológicas (precipitação pluviométrica e temperatura média do ar) a casos notificados de dengue em cidades do estado da Paraíba, no período de 2007 a 2017.
