Exploring the use of portable mode A ultrasound for body composition assessment: A narrative review

Resumo: The evaluation of body composition plays a crucial role in nutrition and is divided into direct, indirect, and doubly indirect techniques. The use of ultrasound (US) mode A, particularly with the BodyMetrix BX-2000 equipment, has become notable for its accessibility. However, there are still few studies that adequately describe its use. Therefore, this study aims to review the available literature on the validation of portable US mode A in different contexts and populations. When compared to other methods, the review reveals variations in accuracy, especially between men and women. Although the equipment appears to be valid for estimating body fat percentage, its accuracy varies in relation to reference methods, and the need for standardization is emphasized due to different measurement techniques and locations. In summary, the importance of further research for standardization in measurement procedures, including specific equations to estimate body composition with the obtained data, is emphasized.

Al compararlo con otros métodos, la revisión revela variaciones en la precisión, especialmente entre hombres y mujeres. Aunque el equipo parece ser válido para estimar el porcentaje de grasa corporal, su precisión varía en relación a los métodos de referencia, y se destaca la necesidad de estandarización debido a diferentes técnicas de medición y ubicaciones. En resumen, se enfatiza la importancia de investigaciones adicionales para la estandarización de los procedimientos de medición, incluyendo ecuaciones específicas para estimar la composición corporal con los datos obtenidos.A avaliação da composição corporal desempenha um papel crucial no processo de cuidado nutricional e em saúde e conta com diversas técnicas. O uso da ultrassonografia (US) modo A, particularmente com o equipamento BodyMetrix BX-2000, tornou-se notório nos últimos anos por sua acessibilidade e portabilidade. Entretanto, ainda são poucos os estudos que descrevem adequadamente seu uso. Sendo assim, este estudo busca revisar a literatura disponível sobre a validação o US portátil modo A em diferentes contextos e populações. Comparando o US portátil modo A com outros métodos de avaliação da composição corporal, foram observadas na literatura variações na precisão, especialmente entre homens e mulheres. Embora o equipamento pareça válido para estimar o percentual de gordura corporal, sua acurácia varia em relação aos métodos de referência, e a necessidade de padronização é destacada devido a diferentes técnicas e locais de medição.
