Summary: The Border Collie breed is very popular in Brazil and has certain susceptibilities to express genetic diseases, with different manifestations. This review analyzes the main genetic diseases in Border Collie dogs and that can also affect other herding breeds. The research was carried out through a bibliographic survey and aims to demonstrate specifications of each disease, comparing their incidences in Brazil and other countries, as well as raising awareness among veterinarians and guardians about the presence and possible reproduction of these diseases when not studied. It can be concluded that the rarity of genetic diseases in the Border Collie breed is relative and results more from the lack of knowledge of guardians and veterinarians than from their low prevalence. Control must be carried out through genetic markers and imaging tests, in addition to planning the cross breeding of dogs to avoid homozygosity.

La presente revisión analiza las principales enfermedades genéticas en perros Border Collie que pueden afectar a otras razas de pastoreo. La investigación se llevó a cabo a través de un levantamiento bibliográfico y tiene como objetivo demostrar las especificaciones de cada enfermedad, la incidencia comparativa de casos en Brasil y en otros países, así como la conciencia de los médicos veterinarios y tutores sobre la presencia y posible reproducción de estas enfermedades cuando no estudiadas. Se puede concluir que la rareza de las enfermedades genéticas en la raza Border Collie es relativa y resulta más del desconocimiento de tutores y veterinarios que de su baja prevalencia. El control debe realizarse a través de marcadores genéticos y pruebas de imagen, además de planificar el cruce de perros para evitar la homocigosidad.A raça Border Collie apresenta uma alta popularidade no Brasil e possui certa suscetibilidade em expressar doenças genéticas, com distintas manifestações. A presente revisão analisa as principais doenças genéticas em cães da raça Border Collie e que podem afetar ainda outras raças de pastoreio. A pesquisa foi realizada por meio de levantamento bibliográfico e possui como objetivo demonstrar especificações de cada doença, comparativo de incidência de casos no Brasil e em outros países, bem como buscar a conscientização de médicos veterinários e tutores sobre a presença e a possível reprodução dessas enfermidades quando não estudadas. Pode-se concluir que a raridade das doenças genéticas na raça Border Collie é relativa e resulta mais do desconhecimento de tutores e médicos veterinários do que propriamente de sua baixa prevalência.
