Resumo: | The Down Syndrome (DS) is a genetic disorder, its characteristics may impact functional skills. The instrument “Pediatric Evaluation of Disability Inventory'' (PEDI) does mensureant the functional independence degree in the mobility area, self-care and social function. Therefore, this study aims to describe the functional performance level of DS children, according to PEDI. It is a descriptive research, with quantitative approach, it was made in the Associação de Pais e Amigos Excepcionais (APAE) in a city of Bahia southwest. Ten caregivers of SD children participated in the survey, with both genders, with ages between 2 to 6 years old and 11 months old that were registered in the health services of APAE. It was used to data collection a sociodemographic information questionnaire built by the researches of the study and the PEDI, it was done through interviews with the same caregivers. As a result, it was observed that 63,3% of the children presented an score under the expected to their ages, in the functional skills area and 66,6% of them presented a lower score in the part of the caregiver support, pointing out that there is a delay in the acquisition of functional capacity of these ones. It is necessary the knowledge of these data by the early intervention professionals that assist these individuals, about the stimulus of functionals skills, such as the guideline and the incentive to the caregivers about the continued stimulus in the household environment giving them the opportunity to realize their actions with independence or minimum assistance. |

El instrumento Pediatric Evaluation of Disability Inventory (PEDI) mide el grado de independencia funcional en las áreas de movilidad, autocuidado y función social. Así, el estudio tiene como objetivo describir el nivel de desempeño funcional de los niños con SD, según el PEDI. La encuesta es una investigación descriptiva, con enfoque cuantitativo, realizada en la Asociación de Padres y Amigos Excepcionales (APAE), en una ciudad del sudoeste de Bahía. Participaron de la encuesta diez cuidadores de niños con SD de ambos sexos, cuya edad varió de 2 a 6 años y 11 meses, registradas en los servicios de salud de la APAE. Se utilizó un cuestionario para recolectar información sociodemográfica, así como el instrumento de evaluación PEDI, realizado a través de entrevistas con los cuidadores. Como resultado, se observó que 63,3% de los niños tienen una puntuación inferior a la esperada para su edad en el área de Habilidades Funcionales, y 66,6% tienen una puntuación inferior en la parte de Asistencia al Cuidador, o sea, existe un retraso en la adquisición de su capacidad funcional. Es necesario que esos datos sean de conocimiento de los profesionales de intervención temprana que atenden a ese público, acerca de la estimulación de habilidades funcionales, así como la orientación y incentivo a los cuidadores sobre la estimulación continuada en el ámbito domiciliario, brindándoles la oportunidad de realizar acciones con independencia o mínima asistencia.A Síndrome de Down (SD) é uma condição de origem genética, cujas características exibidas podem impactar nas habilidades funcionais. O instrumento Pediatric Evaluation of Disability Inventory (PEDI) faz mensuração do grau de independência funcional nas áreas de mobilidade, autocuidado e função social. Desse modo, o estudo objetiva descrever o nível de desempenho funcional de crianças com SD, segundo a PEDI. Trata-se de uma pesquisa descritiva, com abordagem quantitativa, realizada na Associação de Pais e Amigos Excepcionais (APAE) de um município do sudoeste da Bahia. Participaram dez cuidadores de crianças com SD, de ambos os sexos, com idade de 2 anos a 6 anos e 11 meses, cadastrados nos serviços de saúde da APAE. Utilizou-se para coleta de dados um questionário de informações sociodemográficas, construído pelas pesquisadoras do estudo e a PEDI, sendo realizada através de entrevista com os mesmos cuidadores. Como resultado, observou-se que 63,3% das crianças apresentaram escore abaixo do esperado para a idade, na área de Habilidades Funcionais e 66,6% delas apresentaram menor escore na parte de Assistência do Cuidador, destacando que há um atraso na aquisição de capacidade funcional destas.
