Irrational use of medicines set occuring due health care in the country, which is mostly a service of difficult access. Many patients fail to seek specialized medical care and eventually use medications indiscriminately, such habit promotes the blinding of possible diseases. This study aims to present facts and studies related to self-medication, what induces this habit in the population and its causes. The study was conducted through bibliographic research based on articles, scientific journals, websites, and publications. Articles dealing with self-medication and the class of NSAIDs were retrieved, and two articles of the field study type with the adverse effects of NSAIDs. The thorough bibliographic analysis about NSAIDs, their adverse effects, researches found and the importance of the orientation about their risks showed that there is a need for the improvement of programs and projects about this theme, as well as works of disclosure about this subject from health professionals and the entire population.
