Resumo: The present study aims to study the prevalence of congenital syphilis in Northeastern Brazil from 2009-2018. It is an epidemiological, retrospective and descriptive study of a population nature, using secondary data, in which a case study was carried out. Congenital syphilis, obtained from the Notifiable Diseases Information System (SINAN). Assessing aspects related to the year of diagnosis of congenital syphilis in newborns, gestational age, information on the mother's prenatal care, education, pregnant woman's age and the time of diagnosis. The data were tabulated, using the TABNET and Microsoft Office Excel 2019 programs. During the study period, 56,985 cases of newborns with syphilis in the Northeast of Brazil were confirmed, with an average of 5,698.5 cases per year. In 2018, the highest number of new cases was registered (n = 14705), and in 2009, the lowest number (n = 1983) and there was an increase in the frequency of cases of congenital syphilis from 2009 to 2018. The a greater number of syphilis cases occurred in pregnant women with incomplete primary education and aged 20 to 39 years old with 3,278 and 14,109 in 2018 respectively. The identification of cases of maternal syphilis was performed mainly at delivery (53.2%). Also noteworthy was the increasing prevalence of prenatal care from 2009 to 2017, with the highest year of 2017, with 5640 notifications. Thus, the increased incidence in the gestational period and the consequent increase in cases of congenital syphilis can only be minimized and controlled when prevention and control measures are satisfactorily applied.
