Resumo: Objective: The objective was to evaluate the influence of the hydrofluoric acid (HF) etching time in different vitreous ceramics, in order to establish the best protocol that enables an adequate prosthetic adhesion of the restorative material. Methodology: This is a systematic review of in vitro studies. For its realization, the descriptors "Veneers", "Crowns", "Ceramics", "Ceramic", "Etching Time", "Application Time", "Surface Treatments", "Hydrofluoric Acid" and "Adhesion" were used in the Scopus, PubMed, Cochrane Library, SciElo, Web of Science and Lilacs bases. Studies that investigated the effects of the application time of HF on the adhesion of vitreous ceramics were included. The level of evidence for the selected articles followed the principles of the Oxford Center for Evidence-Based Medicine. This review followed the recommendations of the Preferred Reporting Items for Systematic Reviews and Meta-analyzes (PRISMA). Results: The search strategy resulted in 290 studies, of which 5 were included in the review. The studies demonstrated different evaluative parameters such as microstructural roughness, wettability, shear strength, biaxial flexural strength and microhardness of ceramics, in order to investigate the influence of HF etching time on vitreous ceramics, including feldspar, of lithium silicate reinforced by zirconia and lithium disilicate. Etching with HF for 60s is recommended for feldspathic ceramics, while for lithium silicate ceramics reinforced by zirconia and lithium disilicate it is indicated for 20s. Conclusion: The etching time of the ceramic with HF influences the adhesion. Prolonged etching times are detrimental to vitreous ceramics, reflecting a reduction in prosthetic adhesion.
