Resumo: Little attention has been given to the Vice-Presidents of the BrazilianImperial Provinces. They occupied a position with considerable role to theregional politics as well as to the relationship between local powers leveland central government. Initially the Vice-Presidents were chosen amongthe members of the Provincial Assemblies; after 1840, they started to beappointed by the Imperial Court, although keeping their ground on thelocal political processes. This article addresses the Vice-Presidents activitiesin the Mato Grosso Province and their relative autonomy in face of centralgovernment representatives.

Elesdesempenhavam cargos de peso tanto para a política regional quantopara o relacionamento que se estabelecia entre elas e o governo central.Inicialmente, os ocupantes desses postos eram escolhidos entre osdeputados das assembleias provinciais, passando, na década de 1840, aser de nomeação da Corte, sem deixarem de ser moeda de troca valiosanos jogos políticos.
