Teenagers’ perceptions of influences and consequences of drug use

Introduction: Drug abuse by teenagers is a public health problem.Objectives: To describe the perception of female adolescents about their parents’ reaction when they find out about drug use; and the influence of family and friends on this consumption.Materials and Methods: Descriptive exploratory study, of qualitative nature. Female adolescents who were welcomed into a therapeutic community for drug users constituted the group of participants. Data collection took place in an individual approach, through an interview in a reserved place, following a semi-structured script prepared by the authors, including socio-demographic data and questions about the use of psychoactive substances. The analysis took place through the analysis of thematic-categorical content.Results: It was possible to establish four thematic categories: 1) reaction of the parents when they discover the use of drugs by their daughters; 2) delegation of the family role to the State; 3) influence of friendships and 4) influence of the family context.Conclusions: It is considered that parents use aggressiveness to deal with the discovery of use or appeal to the State for measures and also that social relationships influenced the participants’ use of substances.
