scarcity of scientific material about this management methodology from the perspective not private This article provides for project management within the public administration, in view of the. Thus, the core of the work is the government policy “Choque de Gestão”,  that brought Project Management to the State of Minas Gerais, which were established routines and monitoring instruments for the management, based on “Metodologia Estruturada de Planejamento e Controle de Projetos”(MEPCP)  for various knowledge areas defined by the Project Management Body Of knowledge (PMBOK). Inserted in this context, cost management is an area of fundamental and complex inside the project management and to deal with the various peculiarities typically of budget management in the public sector the difficulty is increased. For the research was made a retrospective study about the projects’  costs in the State Secretariat of Social Defense, the results showed, in general, that the procedures adopted were not effective and the use of public resources is not being done optimally. Besides, there is not, at the end of the project, an evaluation of the process and thus no verification failures and best practices that bring the necessary feedback for improving cost management.
