A spatial analysis of poverty in the State of Alagoas

Resumo: | In the present study we sought to analyze the spatial distribution of poverty of the municipalities in Alagoas, based on the concept of absolute poverty. For this purpose, we used the technical analysis exploratory spatial data and spatial econometrics models. The database used in this research was obtained from the United Nations Development Program (UNDP). Among the results, we can highlight three: a) there is a strong intra-regional discrepancy in the state, especially between East and “Sertão” mesoregions; b) there is an inverse relationship between poverty and the variables per capita income and urbanization rate, while the opposite occurs with respect to the Gini index and c) there is a spatial dependence of poverty, in other words, there is a degree of similarity between the municipalities analyzed, so that poverty in a municipality is explained partly by poverty in neighboring municipalities. These results are relevant, because they provide evidence related to the importance of spatial dependence on the poverty of the Alagoas’s municipalities, being useful to support public policies that promote the development of these localities. |

Para ello, se utilizó la técnica de análisis exploratorio de datos espaciales y de modelos de econometría espacial. Los datos utilizados en esta investigación fueron obtenidos del Programa de las Naciones Unidas para el Desarrollo (PNUD). Entre los resultados encontrados, se pueden destacar tres: a) existe una fuerte discrepancia intrarregional en el estado, principalmente entre las mesorregiones Este y Sertão; b) existe una relación inversa entre la pobreza y las variables ingreso per cápita y tasa de urbanización, mientrás que ocurre lo contrario con respecto al índice de Gini y c) existe una dependencia espacial de la pobreza, es decir, hay un cierto grado de similitud entre los municipios analizados, de modo que la pobreza en un municipio se explica, en parte, por la pobreza en los municipios vecinos. Estos resultados son relevantes, ya que proporcionan evidencia relacionada con la importancia de la dependencia espacial de la pobreza en los municipios de Alagoas, siendo útiles para subsidiar las políticas públicas que buscan promover el desarrollo de estos lugares.No presente trabalho buscou-se analisar a distribuição espacial da pobreza nos municípios alagoanos, a partir do conceito de pobreza absoluta. Para esse fim, utilizou-se a técnica de análise exploratória de dados espaciais e os modelos de econometria espacial. Os dados utilizados nesta pesquisa foram obtidos junto ao Programa das Nações Unidas para o Desenvolvimento (PNUD). Dentre os resultados obtidos, pode-se destacar três: a) existem fortes discrepâncias intrarregionais no estado, principalmente entre as mesorregiões Leste e Sertão; b) há uma relação inversa entre a pobreza e as variáveis renda per capita e taxa de urbanização, enquanto que ocorre o contrário com relação ao índice de Gini e c) há uma dependência espacial da pobreza, ou seja, há um certo grau de similaridade entre os municípios analisados, de modo que a pobreza em um município é explicada, em parte, pela pobreza nos municípios vizinhos.
