Summary: | The present paper aims to reflect on the role of discursive practices in the writing of concluding chapters in PhD theses written in English and in Portuguese. The research, characterized as a descriptive and comparative study, analysed ten concluding chapters covering the areas of discourse analysis and text linguistics. Two discursive practices were examined: the rhetorical structure of the chapters, according to Swales’ model (1990), and the way writers project themselves in the texts. The results revealed that there are four rhetorical moves in the writing of the chapters and that there is a considerable difference concerning the role writers choose to represent themselves in the concluding chapters in the two cultures. |

Se considera, en este trabajo, sólo el capítulo de conclusión. En la investigación, que se caracteriza como descriptiva y comparativa, se analizó diez capítulos de conclusión de tesis de doctorado del área de análisis del discurso y lingüística de texto. Se examinó dos prácticas discursivas: la estructura retórica del capítulo, según el modelo de Swales (1990), y la forma cómo los escritores se proyectan en sus textos. Los resultados apuntaron cuatro unidades retóricas en la redacción de los capítulos conclusivos y una sensible diferencia entre las dos culturas en cuanto al papel que el escritor elige para proyectarse en el capítulo final de la tesis.Cet article a comme objectif réfléchir sur le rôle des pratiques discursives employées dans la rédaction de thèses de doctorat dans les langues anglaise et portugaise, tout en considérant seulement le chapitre destiné à la conclusion. La recherche, qui est caractérisée par une investigation à la fois descriptive et comparative, a analysé dix chapitres de conclusions de thèses de doctorat dans le domaine du discours et de la linguistique de texte. Des pratiques discursives furent prises en compte: la structure rhétorique du chapitre, selon le modèle de Swales (1990), et la forme selon laquelle les écrivains se projettent dans leurs textes. Les résultats ont signalé quatre unités rhétoriques dans la rédaction de chapitres conclusifs et une sensible différence dans les deux cultures quant au rôle dont l’écrivain choisit pour se projeter dans le dernier chapitre des thèses.O presente artigo tem por objetivo refletir sobre o papel das práticas discursivas na redação de teses de doutorado nas línguas inglesa e portuguesa, considerando-se aqui apenas o capítulo de conclusão.
