Re-thinking the training of first language teachers: theory, practice and the construction of identities

Resumo: This paper discusses the formative process of L1 teachers by questioning the relation between theory and practice in the curriculum of undergraduate courses in language teaching. We discuss the many senses that are attributed to theory, and the way some pedagogical identities are built. Our thesis is that a reflexive and critical practice cannot be constructed disconnected from theoretical knowledge. The teaching of writing is taken as an example of a possible relation between theory and practice, which could lead to the construction of text producers who are also authors of their texts.

Examinamos los varios sentidos atribuidos a la teoría y la construcción de algunas formas de identidad pedagógica. Nuestra tesis defiende que una práctica reflexiva y crítica no puede construirse teniendo al margen los conocimientos de referencia. Para ello, ejemplificamos nuestro argumento con relación a la enseñanza de la lengua escrita y la construcción de un productor, autor de su propio texto.Cet article révisite la formation de professeurs de langue maternelle, tout en discutant la relation entre la théorie et la pratique, à partir d’un regard sur les contenus curriculaires de cours en licence de Lettres. On discute plusieurs sens attribués à la théorie et comment sont construits quelques formes d’identité pédagogique. Notre thèse constate  qu’une pratique réfléxive, critique, ne peut pas être construite en marge des savoirs de référence. Pour cela, on explique cet argument par rapport à l’enseignement de la langua écrite et la construction d’un producteur, auteur de son propre texte.Este artigo revisita a formação de professores de língua materna, questionando a relação teoria e prática, a partir de um olhar sobre as grades curriculares de cursos de licenciatura em Letras. Discutimos os vários sentidos atribuídos à teoria e como são construídas algumas formas de identidade pedagógica. Nossa tese é a de que uma prática reflexiva, crítica, não pode se construir à margem dos saberes de referência.
