Resumo: This article aims to analyze the evolution of the socioeconomic development of municipalities from Mato Grosso do Sul State (MS, Brazil) from 2005 to 2013, measured by the Firjan Index of Municipal Development (FIMD) that analyses the interaction of public social spending on work and income, health and education sectors. The municipalities were classified in: i) trend to growth; ii) trend to development; iii) vicious circle; iv) virtuous circle. Result showed a great gap among municipalities, enhanced on that located in international borderlines. It also revealed that municipalities with major spending on health and education presented a virtuous circle of development.

It also revealed that municipalities with major spending on health and education presented a virtuous circle of development.O objetivo do artigo foi analisar a evolução do desenvolvimento socioeconômico dos municí­pios de Mato Grosso do Sul (MS) entre os anos de 2005 e 2013, mensurados pelo Índice Firjan de Desenvolvimento Municipal (IFDM) que analisa a interação dos gastos sociais públicos nos setores de trabalho e renda, saúde e educação. Os municí­pios foram categorizados em: i) tendendo ao crescimento; ii) tendendo ao desenvolvimento; iii) cí­rculo vicioso; e iv) cí­rculo virtuoso. Constatou-se grande desigualdade entre os municí­pios e que estas ficam mais evidentes naqueles localizados na faixa de fronteira internacional.
