The role of leaders in the Strategies of Accor Hotels of Brazil

Resumo: The objective that motivated this research was to analyze how the strategies adopted by Accor Hotels in Brazil were influenced by its executive directors between 1974 and 2006. A theoretical approach was used, based on texts about strategy and leadership. In order to find out the respondents’ views, a qualitative case study was carried out. Thirteen executives involved in the strategic management of the organization were interviewed. The most important method used was the semi-structured interview, to collect data from each of the respondents. The analysis of the data involved the description and interpretation of the different aspects of the phenomenon investigated. Since the organization, of French origin, was seeking growth in the turbulent Brazilian environment, the interactions between the individuals and the company helped Accor Hotels to gain, and keep its leading position on the market. The results indicate that the strategies adopted by the company were influenced by the vision, knowledge and autonomy of its executives. Thus, it is hoped that this research has contributed to scientific knowledge in that it identifies the formation of a dominant coalition that also molded the strategies, and determines succession between leaders as an important aspect in retaining the growth trajectory of the hotel chain. La revisión teórica del estudio toma como base textos sobre estrategia y liderazgo. Intentando descubrir las perspectivas de los encuestados, se desarrolló un estudio de caso cualitativo. Fueron entrevistados trece ejecutivos que actuaron en la administración estratégica de la organización. Para la recolección de datos se utilizó principalmente el método de entrevista semiestructurada. El análisis de los datos comprendió la descripción y la interpretación de diferentes aspectos del fenómeno investigado. Puesto que la organización de origen francés intentó crecer en un ambiente turbulento como es el brasileño, la interacción entre los individuos y la firma contribuyó a que la Accor Hotels alcanzase y mantuviese su liderazgo en el mercado. Los resultados indicaron que las estrategias adoptadas por la empresa fueron influenciadas por la visión, conocimiento y autonomía de sus líderes. De ese modo, se cree que esta investigación ha contribuído con el conocimiento científico por haber identificado la formación de una coalición dominante que también moldeó las estrategias, y por verificar que la sucesión entre líderes fue importante para mantener la trayectoria de crecimiento. Treze executivos que atuaram na administração estratégica da organização foram entrevistados. Utilizou-se principalmente o método de entrevista semiestruturada para a coleta de dados. A análise dos dados compreendeu a descrição e a interpretação de diferentes aspectos do fenômeno investigado. Visto que a organização de origem francesa procurou crescer num ambiente turbulento como é o brasileiro, a interação entre os indivíduos e a firma contribuiu para que a Accor Hotels alcançasse e mantivesse a sua liderança de mercado. Os resultados indicaram que as estratégias adotadas pela empresa foram influenciadas pela visão, conhecimento e autonomia dos seus líderes. Desse modo, acredita-se que esta pesquisa tenha contribuído com o conhecimento científico por ter identificado a formação de uma coalizão dominante que também moldou as estratégias e por verificar que a sucessão entre líderes foi importante para manter a trajetória de crescimento.
