Resumo: The appearance of type 2 diabetes mellitus is related to several events, being overweight one of the main causes for this disease. In this context, the objective of this paper was to identify the prevalence of overweight as well as its associated factors in diabetic patients seen in the Primary Care network. This is a cross-sectional study with data from medical records of patients with diabetes treated by the Family Health Strategy Teams located in the city of Diamantina-MG. The studied population was described, according to the characteristics in absolute and relative terms. Subsequently, through the bivariate analysis, the association with excess weight was assessed using the Chi-square test, then the variables associated with excess weight were selected for a multivariate analysis by Poisson Regression. Although 613 medical records of type 2 diabetes patients were located, only 196 (31.9%) reached the inclusion criteria, i.e., weight and height measurement available in the medical records, thus, this was the sample included in the study. The average BMI was 29.1 ± 6.3 kg/m2, 62.8% of the patients were elderly, and 71.4% were female. Regarding the distribution of nutritional status, overweight reached 44% of the elderly and 82% of adults. Women and adults were associated with overweight in the studied group. There was a high prevalence of overweight, which was associated with females and individuals under 60 years of age.
