Resumo: | Organic dyes derived from phthaleins have a large number of applications, which we can mention: paints, adhesives, insecticides, food colors, and pH indicators. These dyes can be synthesized by the reaction of Friedel-Crafts acylation, followed by an addition reaction to the carbonyl compound. The Friedel-Crafts reaction is characterized by the presence of some catalyst which behaves as a Lewis acid: AlCl3, SnCl4, ZnCl2, H2SO4, among others. This work aimed the use of Niobium pentachloride (NbCl5) as catalyst for the acylation reaction aiming the synthesis of the phthalein derivatives, determining the reaction times, as well as their yields. The behavior of the phthalein derivatives when subjected to strongly acidic and basic pHs was also studied. These compounds showed discolorations at extreme pHs, making them usable for applications as indicators. The phthalins assume different conformations, when submitted to a strongly alkaline pH, having high light absorption in the visible region. A photophysical study of these compounds was carried out through the UVVis absorption spectra. The phthalin derivatives obtained absorption within the region of the visible and with high intensity of absorption, when dissolved in alkaline pHs |
