Resumo: The temporomandibular disorders (TMD) encompasses several muscular and articular pathologies that present the pain as a symptom with high prevalence, resorting to innumerable therapeutic modalities for its relief or elimination. Acupuncture, a therapy derived from Chinese medicine, has been used in the control of pain and inflammation in many health areas and may also be used in dentistry. Its action mechanism has been studied and its application has shown promising results. Substances like neurotransmitters and neuromodulators reduce or eliminate the pain and other symptoms. The purpose of this study is to analyze through selected literature review, the use of acupuncture in the TMDs treatments with considerations about its action mechanism and expected results. Acupuncture showed in the great majority of the studies analyzed efficiency in the control of pain related to TMD, mainly in pain of muscular origin

A acupuntura, terapia oriunda da Medicina Chinesa, tem sido empregada no controle de dor e inflamação em muitas áreas da saúde, podendo ser também utilizada na Odontologia. Seu mecanismo de ação vem sendo estudado e sua utilização vem se mostrando promissora. Substâncias como neurotransmissores e neuromoduladores, reduzem ou aliviam a dor e outros sintomas. O presente estudo tem como finalidade analisar, por meio de textos selecionados na literatura, o emprego da acupuntura no tratamento das DTMs, tecendo considerações sobre seus mecanismos de ação e resultados esperados.
