Resumo: This paper aims to discuss factors that have collaborated for the lack of fulfillment of one of the main functions of the school: its contribution to the building of life projects or perspectives for the future. To act to build life projects involves imposing interdictions to immediate pleasures as a means to support future rewards; school diploma loses meaning, but it is through it that projections of a future life are built. The references for this discussion are young people from urban impoverished periphery, as well as the schools to which they attend.

Agir na construção de projetos de vida implica impor interdições a prazeres imediatizados em função de recompensas futuras; o certificado escolar esvaece seu significado, mas é por meio dele que projeções de vida futura são construídas.
